Frequently Asked Questions

How do I log into Gmail?
Gmail requires an App Password for IMAP access. To generate one, visit your Google Account security settings and enable 2-Step Verification, then create an App Password. You can search "how to create a Gmail App Password" for step-by-step instructions.
How do I log into Outlook.com?
Outlook.com (Microsoft personal accounts) requires IMAP access to be enabled. At this time, Microsoft may restrict IMAP access on some account types. If you are unable to connect, your account may not support IMAP. Please refer to Microsoft's official support documentation or contact Microsoft directly for assistance.
Does Penance access or store my emails?
No. Everything happens on your device and on your mail server — we never see any of it. The one exception is unsubscribes: Penance contacts the sender's server on your behalf to complete the request. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How can I verify that my data stays private?
You are encouraged to independently verify Penance's network activity. You can use a network monitoring tool to inspect traffic from your device and confirm that no email content or credentials are sent to servers operated by us. All actions taken by the app are performed with your explicit confirmation before any changes are applied.
What happens when I confirm an action?
Penance will show you exactly what it's about to do and ask you to confirm before making any changes. Once confirmed, emails are moved to Trash or Spam and unsubscribe requests are sent to the sender. Please review the confirmation screen carefully before proceeding, as these actions may not be reversible.
